Orinda Sends $10K to Mayor of Serdar, Turkmenistan As a Gesture of Goodwill Prior to Visit

Orinda, CA – The town of Orinda is gearing up to send a delegation to Serdar, Turkmenistan, to formalize a sister city agreement, following a peculiar request from Serdar's mayor. The mayor of Serdar communicated via fax that it is customary for visiting delegates to deposit $10,000 into the host city mayor's bank account, a sum that would be reciprocated upon his and the Serdarian delegates' visit to Orinda.

Historically in Turkmenistan, such exchanges involved livestock, a firstborn child, or a late-model tractor. However, due to international regulations restricting the transport of children and livestock across borders, and the logistical challenge of shipping heavy machinery, the tradition has evolved to a simple cash transaction.

“We thought of sending over some Labradoodles or one of the Johnston triplets, but the paperwork seemed overwhelming, and the city's attorney weighed in that eminent domain does not apply to children, even if the family has several and seems overwhelmed, says anyone who has seen Britney with those brats at Safeway”, stated the Claire Danfoth, head of the Orinda Sister City Search Committee. Recognizing the potential economic benefits of increased tourism from Turkmenistan, Orinda's mayor and cabinet believe this relatively small investment could lead to significant returns in tourism dollars and local tax revenue. The city plans to utilize $10,000 from a recent drug seizure for this purpose, viewing it as an ideal use of the funds.

Representative Mark Andrews has volunteered to join the delegation, citing his international experience from his college days as a towel boy at Club Med. "This is an excellent opportunity to strengthen our global connections and bring economic benefits to Orinda," Andrews stated.

The delegation is scheduled to depart for Turkmenistan within a week, ensuring their return in time to participate in Orinda’s 4th of July parade. This year, Andrews will be featured in the parade, riding in the back of a Tesla Cybertruck, symbolizing support for the new Tesla Ouranus Cobalt mine—an initiative expected to further boost the local economy.

This sister city negotiation comes as Orinda is increasingly looking to enhance its international ties and explore new economic opportunities. The community awaits the outcomes of these talks, hopeful for a fruitful partnership that will enrich both Orinda and Serdar.
